Fall Marriage Conference: Nov. 15, 2014

Gail and Gordon MacDonald
Gordon and Gail MacDonald to speak on "Through the Years"

Gordon and Gail MacDonald have been one of the most influential ministry couples in New England for over 50 years.  Married for 52 years, Gordon and Gail will share of God's faithfulness and the choices each couple face within marriage as they journey through life together.

We are delighted that the MacDonalds will be the guest speakers at H.I.M.'s one-day fall marriage conference, to be held on Saturday, November 15, in Lynnfield, MA.  Registration is open!

Engagement Matters

Know someone who is contemplating marriage?
Paul and Virginia Friesen
Twice this year -- in late November and again in mid-March -- H.I.M. is offering a weekend retreat for engaged and pre-engaged couples, led by Paul and Virginia Friesen.  They will discuss the areas of Convictions, Character, Compatibility, and Chemistry. During each session on these areas, couples will first have an opportunity to reflect together and discuss the topic, and then hear a presentation to the whole group.
Past attendees write:
It made us seriously look at the things we'd brushed aside and decide if these were big enough to be deal breakers--or if we could grow through them. We have realized we need to depend far more on God and His word than just on our emotions for marriage.

It is so easy to get caught up in planning the wedding that you forget to continue building the relationship. Engagement Matters gave us a great chance to keep digging deeper into how to have a marriage that is not just ordinary, but extraordinary.

Newport Marriage Retreat - March 2015

David and Cherylyn Hegg
Heggs and Friesens Team Up for Annual March Marriage Retreat

Too often when we talk about marriage, we talk about how hard it is and about the heartache caused by marriages not working out. This weekend will have plenty of helpful workshops to choose from on improving your marriage, but the overall thrust will be one of celebration of the gift of marriage. Come join us for a weekend of great teaching, wonderful worship, helpful workshops, great food, and plenty of time to simply be together and celebrate each other.

David and Cherylyn Hegg and Paul and Virginia Friesen will be teaming up this year as speakers.  The retreat will be held March 6-8, 2015, and this year moves to the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Goat Island.  Registration is now open!

From the Friesen Kitchen
Grease a 9" x 13" pan.

1 box packaged white cake mix (Reserve and set aside 1 cup of dry cake mix)
Mix remaining cake mix with:
    1/2 cup melted margarine
    1 egg
Press into bottom of greased pan.

Mix together:
    1 lb. processed pumpkin
    3 eggs
    1 1/4 cup evaporated milk
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/4 tsp salt
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 tsp ginger
    1/4 tsp cloves
Pour pumpkin mixture over layer one.

LAYER THREE (topping):
Mix together:
    Reserved cake mix (above)
    1/3 cup sugar
    1/4 cup margarine, cold
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Sprinkle topping on pumpkin layer.  Bake at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes.  It will set after it is finished baking.  Refrigerate leftovers.
Note:  Pre-spiced pumpkin can be used in place of pumpkin and spices in layer two.
Keeping Up with Paul and Virginia
After a very busy summer full of a total of 9 family camps (one of which was a newly-offered "Labor Day Weekend Camp" at Campus by the Sea in California), Paul and Virginia have recently been home in Massachusetts for the longest string of days yet in 2014.

You may not have heard that Virginia has spent a fair bit of that time recovering from hernia surgery, now six or seven weeks back.  She's been cleared for all activities again, so all is well.  They've started up their usual fall schedule of counseling, meeting with the Patriots couples weekly (as well as Virginia with the Patriots wives on Wednesday mornings),  speaking at Mom to Mom programs and other venues here and there.  As this issue is being prepared, Virginia is helping to care for their grandchildren in California while son-in-law Gabe is away taking a class, and Paul is spending the week writing his next book.  [Sneak peek just for you loyal readers: this book will be for men, on how to love your wife.]

Pray for that book!  Pray that God will surround Paul with His truth, His wisdom, His inspiration, and His design for marriages.  Thanks for all your prayers for the Friesens and for the work of Home Improvement Ministries.  "More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of."  -Alfred, Lord Tennyson
