The Church Family and Your Family

Saturday, December 1, 2012
9:00 am to 1:30 pm
Lynnfield, MA

The family is God's primary vehicle for passing on values to our children and for providing partnership with our spouse - yet few churches have a specific plan to equip and encourage marriages and families. This conference is designed for pastors and those in the church who want to better help their churches support and strengthen marriages and families.

Come be encouraged and equipped through practical examples of what works to bring an increased focus to your church on healthy marriages and families. Help your church family and your family more fully reflect His family.

Keeping Up with Paul and Virginia
Eight packed weeks of fabulous family camps, six on the west coast and two on the east, finished up well in mid-August.  Each summer, Paul and Virginia select and lead a terrific family camp college staff, together with whom they minister to approximately 50 families each week all summer long. Did you know that Paul and Virginia take time to lead these college kids in a book study during their few hours off between camps each week?  This year the book they used was Radical, by David Platt.  What a great impact they have each summer as they minister not only to families but to the staff they partner with.
Paul & Virginia with Ugandan Pastors and their wives
Ugandan pastors and their wives attended the Friesens' all-day seminar on Christian marriage and ministry.

Almost immediately after camps ended, Paul and Virginia flew to Uganda for 3 weeks of ministry there.  They stayed with Julie and Derek of course, and loved the days they had visiting with them, but they also spoke multiple times: to pastors, to the CURE hospital staff, to  local church congregations, to a gathering of youth, and even to members of parliament.  They were so well-received everywhere that they have been invited to return to Uganda again this coming March.

The dowry system in Uganda presents many challenges to marriage relationships, since paying a dowry for one's wife so often leads to treating her like property, setting her up for abuse.  Virginia wrote, "Our commitment was to teach Biblical design.  The last thing we wanted was to communicate western ideas about sexuality, marriage, etc.  Enough of those ideas have floated through cyberspace and other forms of media and have had a very corrupting and distorting affect on this culture.  For many of them, the concept of a mutually-satisfying marital sexual relationship was a brand new idea.  The truth that there was no place for beating a wife into submission went against common practice.  The belief that husband's headship meant servant leadership, not 'I'm the boss so it's all about me' was hard to swallow (for the men, anyway!).  The culturally acceptable attitude towards women as inferior was turned upside down by the Biblical truth of equality."

With friends at the marriage conference in San Francisco last month
Since returning from Uganda in mid-September, Paul and Virginia have launched into their fall schedule of marriage counseling, weekly meetings with New England Patriots couples study (as well as Virginia's weekly meetings with Patriots wives), working on a couple of new books, and speaking.  See their calendar for all the details, as well as the listing of H.I.M. events for the coming year.  It's full steam ahead, powered by your support.  Please do keep them in your prayers -- for good health, for smooth travels, and most of all, for the continued indwelling of God's Spirit and His words and inspiration in all they teach.  And may you be blessed for your highly valued participation in this precious work for God's Kingdom!
