H.I.M. Announces Dates for Engagement Matters for 2008–2009
Cute engaged couple

Laying a strong foundation for marriage often seems unnecessary during the beautiful days of dating and courtship, but a carefully thought-through marital foundation becomes invaluable when the inevitable "bumps" of life arrive.

Guess what? The time to build strong foundations is during the calm, not during the storm.

Most marriages are not destroyed because of bad cooking, less-than-thrilling sex, stretched financial situations, or poor communication. Most marriages are destroyed because in times of stress due to bad cooking, less-than-thrilling sex, finances, or communication, they do not have a strong foundation to fall back on.

Encourage your friends and relatives to sign up for Engagement Matters. It's a fun and insightful two-day seminar for both engaged and pre-engaged couples. Paul and Virginia and several assisting couples will offer practical wisdom about marriage as it was meant to be-a gift from God-and how to make sure you are on track both to be and to marry a God-honoring spouse.

Engagement Matters is offered three times this coming year! All seminars are held on Saturday and Sunday: October 18-19, 2008, January 10-11, 2009, and April 18-19, 2009.

Upcoming Events

Upcoming Events FlyerThe new H.I.M. event calendar for the 2008-2009 season has been published online, and new events are occasionally added throughout the year, so we encourage you to check the website often. For example, this year's True Love Waits event (now called "Worth It!") has been planned for Saturday, March 7, 2009, and two new H.I.M. marriage conferences have been planned as well. We have great speakers lined up for those: Rev. Richard Dahlstrom in February (he's terrific) and Paul and Virginia Friesen in April (you already know they're terrific). :)

We've prepared an Upcoming Events Flyer listing the main events for you to print out and post on your family bulletin board... or print several and share them with friends! We don't want you to miss a thing, because we don't want to miss YOU!

From the Friesen Bakery
Caramel Corn

Combine in 9"x13" pan and place in 250 degree oven while making sauce:
10 cups warm popped corn
1-1/2 cups cocktail peanuts or almonds

In a heavy 2-quart saucepan, melt:
1/2 cup margarine

Add to margarine:
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/4 cup light Karo syrup
1/4 tsp salt

Bring to rolling boil, stirring constantly. Boil, without stirring, 5 minutes over medium heat. Remove from heat.

Stir in:
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp vanilla or butter flavoring

Quickly pour over popcorn-peanut mixture, tossing until kernels and nuts are well coated. Bake at 250 degrees for 45 minutes, stirring once or twice. Remove from oven and turn out onto aluminum foil to cool. Break into pieces and store in a tightly covered container. Makes 3 quarts.

Send some to your favorite college student!

Paul Friesen speaking at Family Camp

Paul and Virginia and their wonderful staff led 8 weeks of family camp this summer (six on the west coast and two on the east coast) - plus, they were guest speakers at yet another week of family camp in between! You can read about those weeks and how God met them and used them on their blog. Hope you are already in the habit of checking that out on a regular basis. :)

Paul and Virginia are now preparing for a new year full of ministry. Already in this newsletter we've announced some of the events they have planned, but we encourage you to check the H.I.M. website regularly for updates and schedules and all sorts of great information.

This ministry is possible only because of your support. How grateful we are for your prayers, financial backing, attendance at events, and for the email you all occasionally send in telling us about how God has ministered to you through H.I.M. - or through you to another family. May He continue to challenge and use us all for His work in this world. Glory to God!
